We're in the middle of hurricane season and our sailboat S/V Victory! is safely hauled out in Grenada. We are loving the kind, positive and peaceful community here and feel very safe and happy. It was stressful before we arrived as our boat insurance dictates we arrive by June 1st to avoid being hit by a hurricane. However, that's the exact week hurricane Beryl decided to hit Grenada and its outer islands of Carriacou, Petite Martinique and Union. We decided to risk staying north of the storm in St. Martin and remained safe. However, there was a lot of devastation to the outer islands here. Jim was mad at me because I took a trip home to see family, and that week delay put us behind schedule. Luckily, it saved our boat from being devastated with the others as we had a reservation in Carriacou and that's where the marina and boats were destroyed.
So, while waiting for a weather window to Grenada we did a donation drive in St. Martin that was hugely successful resulting in food, supplies and clothing. Then Hopefleet.org gave us money to buy building supplies for Petite Martinique. On top of this, our dear Facebook friends tripled that donation for more roofing nails, hammers, mosquito nets, bleach, fuel, ect.
Hopefleet.org is a fantastic organization of cruisers who deliver aid to hurricane victims. They were luckily able to provide immediate relief to these areas before even the government could arrive! We had enough donations in St. Martin to share with two other boats so they collected and delivered aid as well. In fact, S/V Dwadle is still delivering aid to this day! Hopefleet.org is now using the boats there to house Doctors and medical staff to assist on the outer islands.
As tough as the situation is, the people are staying positive, but they still need help. Please consider donating!
